The Fridge in Auckland's Kingsland is renowned for doing some of the best pies in town.
Flaky, puffy pastry, a flavoursome (often interesting) filling and the feeling that it's been homemade with love is what the best New Zealand pies are made of and there's no better time to eat a pie than during the country's first-ever Pie Week. Of course, every good pie is worth travelling for and talking about. That's why we've got locals to recommend great pies from Kaitaia to Bluff so that you can scout out the 15 best pies in New Zealand before you head off on your next road trip. Or check out the best pies in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch. The Fridge Cafe, Kingsland
Absolutely amazing place to meet with friends, have a yummy catch up lunch with family. Never have I been disappointed with the food or service here. Their salads are to die for and the pies, well that's just a treat! Love the atmosphere of the Fridge and the wider Kingsland community. #cafetab
Patrick's Pies, Tauranga
A great selection of yummy fillings surrounded with a flakey crust. Try the vegetarian stuffed full of stir fry veges, roast pumpkin, potato and kumara in spinach cream sauce or the prawn and garlic for seafood lovers. I’ve heard the pepper steak is absolutely yum too.
Picton Village Bakkerij, Picton
Picton Village Bakkerij has some of the best pies in my opinion. The band and I got to experience this delicious, pastry and meaty treat on our 2013 tour, and planning on going back in a future tour.
Blue Belle Cafe, Wellington
Though island bay is a bit of a hike, the flaky delicious heaven that is the pies at Blue Belle make it entirely worthwhile. The vegetarian option (a spinach/feta number) is just as good as the meat varieties, of which the steak and mushroom would be my pick!
Kiwi Pies, Te Awamutu
Kiwi Pies in Te Awamutu are wonderful. The meat is real, and in the morning you can see the guys shredding chicken off the bones, chopping onions. The result is a real kiwi tasting pie. It is worth the drive, or stopping by if youre driving south through Te Awamutu.
Ruatoria Pies, Ruatoria
If you're travelling around the East Cape, don't miss the chance to stop and fuel up on a pie from one of New Zealand's most legendary pie makers, Ruatoria Pies. You'll find a wide, varied selection (including my favourite Kiwi classic - steak and cheese) of fillings encased in light-as-air pastry. Delicious!
Fairlie Bakehouse, Fairlie
Locals in the know will tell you Fairlie Bakehouse produce some of the best pies in New Zealand and their signature pie is you have to try at least once in your lifetime. With the puffiest pastry and a filling of pork belly and apple it even comes with crackling on top. Their steak pie is also a killer.
Upperdeck, Paihia
This is the pie of all pies. Even reading it gets my mouth watering. Their tender lamb shanks and kumara encrusted in a short pastry served with a fresh green salad and mint sauce is the bees knees of any pie list. And Paihia is a pretty groovy town to chow down in!
Turangi Bakehouse and Cafe, Turangi
Good potato top mince pies can be found and consumed hurriedly at the Turangi Bakehouse and Cafe on the way to the wintery slopes of Mt Ruapehu. It's a great winter warmer meal option, and perfectly filling too. The pies are always baked fresh and the pastry is never soggy and greasy.
Beaut Bakery, Taupo
Beaut Bakery makes a mean chicken pie. I love the creamy vege filling and the yummy bits of well-seasoned chicken it is packed with. The pastry is golden, just the right amount of flaky and totally melt-in-your mouth divine. Definitely worth a stop for anyone driving throygh Taupo.
Anderson's Pie Shop, Hawera
Home to the massively sized portion, Anderson Pies are a top competitor for my heart and others hearts around Taranaki. Not only do they have your typical steak pies, but they also make their own apricot pies, something I have never heard of before but they are pretty darn tempting!
Clareville Bakery, Carterton
We passed through Carterton a few weeks ago and we called in for something to eat! The bakery firstly smells amazing and the food looks and tastes delicious. They are famous in Carterton for their pies, homemade breads and creative desserts, I can't wait to go back!
Toad Hall Store & Cafe, Nelson
Great place for a lunchtime pie with lots of different flavours - venison, blue cheese etc as well as the usual suspects. Toad Hall offers great service and high quality food - their pies don’t disappoint.
Sheffield Pie Shop, Sheffield
This famous pie shop is my favourite. When pushed I'll choose the pork and apple every time with its tender chunky pork pieces with real apple slices.
Stella's Cafe, Bluff
Pastry lovers rejoice, I have the perfect pie for you and it’s at Stella’s Café. Their mince and cheese pie is my favourite and you’ll find a pie to love at this iconic Bluff bakery. Options include: mince and cheese and bacon and egg, and the more interesting options like muttonbird, smoked salmon, and their exclusive oyster pies.
