Chan's Restaurant, Masterton
One thing I love about Asian food is how it's presented and they are masters at Chan's! True Chinese food that's fresh and packed with flavor, you can eat there or take it home, Chinese food is made for sharing so it's perfect for when you have unexpected guests come over for dinner!
Golden Harvest Restaurant, Dunedin
Another Dunedin goodie. A friendly restaurant with a nice authentic atmosphere. The garlic prawns a local favourite.
Rams, Wellington
A standard go to for eating out or getting takeaways when I lived on Cuba Street. A really great option of BYOs, the menu here is incredibly tasty with options to please everyone. The salt and pepper squid or pork spare ribs are great, as is the spicy sliced duck salad with the chilli oil dumplings being a must have as a starter.
Regal Chinese Restaurant, Wellington
There is nothing better to do on a rainy day than eat yum cha. Regal is one of the best yum cha venues and on a rainy day you can sit by the steamy window and watch as the drizzle washes down Courtenay Place. With a wide selection of delciousness — from pan fried pork dumplings and custard buns — to the unusual — tripe and chicken feet — you will leave full as a bull.
Dragons, Wellington
Dragons Chinese, located just off Courtenay Place, is a good destination for a large weekend dinner party. With BYO, ample space, and tables fitted out with revolving lazy susan-style daises for sharing plates, the atmosphere here is lively. Prices are steep (a $16 vege egg noodle dish is one of the more affordable options) and vegetarians may need to hunt through pages of meat to find what they're after, but portions are enormous. Plus, MANY portable heaters scattered throughout the restaurant ensure you'll stay warm and cosy on any of Wellington's famously fierce winter nights.
The China Kitchen, Christchurch
The China Kitchen is my favourite place for dumplings. I usually go for an assortment of vegetarian and pork dumplings with their delicious dipping sauces. Dumplings aren't the only thing on the menu however, they have well over 100 other dishes to choose from too!
Welcome Vegetarian, Christchurch
For tasty Chinese food that isn’t going to give you an overdose of sodium or MSG, Welcome Vegetarian is just the place. Specialising in meat-free Chinese dishes, this place is certainly a favourite of mine. They even have vegan ice cream!
Sun World Chinese Restaurant, Auckland
if we want yum cha we only ever bother going to Sun World for their unbeatable dim sum. Make sure you turn up early or book though or you’ll be left waiting for a table!
Grand Harbour Chinese Restaurant, Auckland
Yum cha at Grand Harbour, oh how I love you for a Friday long lunch or a great Sunday date. I love you for your steamy, flavoursome dim sums smothered in soya sauce and chilli oil-dipped goodness but most of all I love you for your bok choy with a squirt of rich oyster sauce. Could there be any better combo than crunchy, crispy greens with a classic Chinese accompaniment of delectable gooey saucy goodness? I think not. That's why whenever I come for lunch, I always make sure I scope out and accost the waiter who has the biggest tray of brassicas. It's no mean feat if you've had the joy of experiencing this ever-bustling establishment . Then I make sure that cart stays near me until I've had my fill of every last, deeply satisfying bok choy bite. Because Grand Harbour, the reason your bok choy is the best in the business is because it's all in the crunch!
Canton Cafe, Auckland
Great food at a great price! Lightning fast service and busy atmosphere.
China Yum Char Restaurant & Bar, Auckland
For yum cha aficionados this is where it's at in Auckland to get an authentic Chinese lunch experience at a very affordable price. For me, it's all about the spring beans and prawn spring rolls. You see, I figure that it's okay to eat my body weight in prawns perfectly wrapped in pillowy pastry parcels because I'm off-setting my fried feast by still getting my greens. Their dumplings are also good and if you are brave, try the chicken feet because they are a whole new taste sensation. I'm salviating already!
