Fire It Up: Mexico in Auckland is a great place to take the family for a worldly feast.

When the weekend starts it's time for rest and relaxation and there's nothing more awesome than ditching the pots, pans and dishes for a night out at a family restaurant. No matter how old the kids are, it's always a treat to sit down and dine on a delicious meal together and perhaps even share a wee sweet treat afterwards. So to take any work out of finding a goodie, we've rounded up the family restaurants in New Zealand that are absolute favourites so no matter where you are with the kids, you can dine in style. And if you have a family restaurant that rocks your world, why not share your love for it on their Localist listing? C'mon it's child's play!

Cocopelli, Christchurch

Fancy heading to a pizza restaurant with the whole family in tow? Cocopelli can cater you at their amazing venue. Their gourmet pizza bar has you covered for hand-crafted pizzas that use delicious authentic ingredients. Choose from your classic toppings or go crazy with some unique flavours like their Yes Dear (Venison) pizza. this is gourmet pizza heaven!

Sweet Mother's Kitchen, Wellington

Down the Mt. Victoria end of Courtney Place is Sweet Mothers Kitchen, a New Orleans fashioned restaurant with southern style cooking. Brunch here goes all day on a Sunday, so its an excellent choice if you are a late riser. I’m a big fan of the eggsadilla which is essentially a large breakfast burrito, also on the highly rated menu are the waffles with fried chicken, top shelf hangover food for those who are in need, also good anytime for those who are fans of well, fried chicken!

Chow Tory, Wellington

Chow's modernist Asian cuisine and fresh cocktail menu is to die for, and on Monday's thanks to their two for one food deal, you actually can! You'd be hard pressed to leave here feeling unhappy. Vegans, vegetarians and those who are gluten free are exceptionally well looked after here.

The Riverhead, Auckland

Great place to grab an affordable bite to eat. Awesome bar food and a restaurant with a more diverse menu. Indoor and outdoor seating options overlooking the estuary. The live blues on a Sunday is always a treat!

Hallertau Brewbar and Restaurant, Auckland

Hallertau have been making waves out west in the brewery scene for some time now. Whether you’re there as a loyal fan of one (or all) of their four all-year-round beers, one-off special brews, or bi-monthly seasonal releases, the establishment always offers sud-lovers pure satisfaction. If you are after a particularly interesting experience, the passionate team run brewery tours every Saturday at 11am and 3:30pm where you'll learn you the ins and out of brewing their amazing beer! Has to be one of the best bars in Auckland for lovers of good beer!

Mexico, Auckland Central

You’re probably already in the know or have already had a good time at Mexico. Arguably the most popular kid on the Britomart block, this place churns out fresh and fun, traditional Mexican with an impressive beverage list to match, which also stays loyal to the theme. The menu items are ideal for sharing, adding a super fun side to your pre-show bite - don’t forget to ask about their specials, too! And if there’s 10 or more of you, you can book through their website, otherwise it’s first come, first served!

Sawadee Thai Cuisine, Auckland

You can't say no to Thai cuisine! Always a delight to eat, full of amazing flavours. The atmosphere here was really relaxed and comforting, good place to go and full of choices.

Prego Restaurant, Auckland

The pizza chef at Prego has been there since the restaurant’s first day in 1986…NINETEEN EIGHTY SIX! He’s one of the sole reasons why Prego is an absolute institution, keeping a never-ending flow of diners coming back for his scrumptious slices. In the hospitality industry it’s consistency that creates longevity for an establishment - and Prego have proved worthy of both of these feats. On the pizza front it’s choices like the classic margherita, pollo arrosto, or marinara that have been on the menu for literally decades, never experiencing a slump in popularity. All I can say is get there, try them, and see why for yourself.

Drexels Breakfast Restaurant, Christchurch

If you’re thinking breakfast think Drexels. This is a dedicated breakfast restaurant, so expect the usual faves like eggs benedict, sausages, bacon and pancakes. My favourites are the crepes! Go by yourself or head along with a group of friends and grab one of the large booths.
