Feast For The Senses: Devil Burger in Invercargill serves up burgers full of value and taste!

It’s not always easy to find great food on a budget, but there’s nothing better than getting something delicious for just a collection of gold coins. We’ve been out looking for the best cheap meals around the country and and stoked to share them with you here. Happy munching!

The Rusty Tractor Cafe and Trading Store, Kerikeri

The Rusty Tractor ticks all my boxes!

It serves delicious, massive and reasonably priced food. I got the biggest chicken sandwich of my life there (I ordered it because I was totally envious of the next table’s food). My smoked-chicken-pita-bread-of-heaven came with a big crunchy serving of fries too.

This place is really family friendly and has lots of room and toys for kids to muck around on while the grown ups lap up the chilled out ambience and quality food and beverages.

Selera Malaysian Cafe, Newmarket

I travelled to Malaysia a few years ago and fell head-over-heels for the unique melting pot of flavours that come from this South-East Asian slice of paradise. So when I came home to Auckland I began a quest - to search out the most original flavours I could find. Malaysian food is a real blend of Malay, Indian and Chinese flavours and that’s what makes it so cool. Before I stumbled across Selera in Newmarket, I thought I’d nailed it with an inner-city restaurant but for a good cheap eat, this little gem is where I go. Known for doing one of the most traditional beef rendang dishes in Auckland, their meals are steal at just $13.50 for a main. And the service is the kind of friendly hospitality you come to expect in Malaysia. What a fabulous find!

The Flaming Onion, Northcote

I’m pretty particular about where I eat beef patties from in a burger and The Flaming Onion never, ever fails to disappoint. They grind their beef in-house and they also do pretty darn fantastic hand-cut agria fries with aioli on the side. And while there’s no denying that this is one of the best burger joints in all of Auckland, the prices at this Northcote gem are pretty darn fantastic too. Here you can arrive with just a crisp $10 note and leave with a massive burger that truly does fill your boots. Or if you are feeling particularly beefy or in need of a super cheap eat then forgo the salad and fork out just $6.50 for a Beef Jr (no lettuce required).

Flippers Foodbar, Whitanga

What’s Summer if not the time of year you can eat your fish and chips down at the beach? Flippers in Whitianga is one of the best fish and chip shops I’ve been to in New Zealand. Amazing, friendly staff and a warm and open atmosphere. Totally laid-back real deal takeaways. HUGE burgers, real fresh fish and heaps of choice. Tip: Take your food down to the beach to eat and don’t forget to get everyone one of their yummy thickshakes to go with it!

Sugoi Sushi, Te Awamutu

Sushi is the perfect summer food. It’s light, fresh and fun! This is one of the best places in the Waikato to get your fill. Great service, plenty of choice and really good value. This is a popular place for locals and travellers alike, so be prepared for a little queue. The staff are pretty efficient so you shouldn’t be waiting long!

Chilando, New Plymouth

Chilando is another food store located in the food court of Centre City. It’s quite a recent addition and it’s all about fresh Mexican food. They offer a selection of soft or crispy tacos of two for only $8 or three for just $10.50, that’s very affordable if you split the bill with a friend. And you can add one of my favourite sides, guacamole, to any meal for only $2.50. If you wanted to go down the healthier route, they have “ensalada” options of chicken or steak with slaw, veggies, vinaigrette and toasted pumpkin seeds!

Tommy Millions, Wellington

Tommy Million’s comes into its own in the summertime – because it’s perfectly located for you to grab a pizza to take to the waterfront or Frank Kitts Park. Order it by the slice or by the box and check out the daily deals. Plus you could go the whole hog and get a carton of its creamy gelato to go, too.

Streat Kitchen, Nelson

This is my pick for a hassle free weekday lunch - try the fish sliders or yummy kebabs from one of the food carts, and sit out in the sun to enjoy it. Streat Kitchen operates from an empty lot on Bridge Street, not far to walk but far enough to stretch your legs and get some fresh air. And the food is delicious and very well priced.

Keo Thai Restaurant, Christchurch

Keo Thai is a fantastic and el cheapo restaurant! As well as having a good selection of beer and wine on offer, Keo Thai is BYO, and if you’re after a perfect venue for a big group dinner, this is the place – you can even book out your own private dining room.

Devil Burger, Invercargil

Feeling a little sinful? Ravenous for satisfaction without care or reason? Devil Burger has exactly what you’re seeking. Ridiculously massive burgers offering you every size and variety of meat available to mankind! Hungry for a deal instead? Every Thursday there is a $10 ribs and chips combo that will leave feeling somewhat gluttonous but overly pleased with yourself for the saving!
