Just 90km north east of Auckland in the Hauraki Gulf lies one of its most beautiful, undiscovered gems - Great Barrier Island. Offering networks of walking and tramping tracks, boutique Great Barrier Island accommodation that's unique, DOC campgrounds, boating and fishing activities aplenty, a trip to Great Barrier Island is a must-do for both Auckland locals and visitors. You can get there by ferry, boat or plane and it's worth staying a few days to soak up the lush rainforests and white-sand beaches. A true summer destination! Kylie loved Tipi & Bob's Waterfront Lodge
This bed and breakfast has some of the best views from any accommodation on Great Barrier Island and looks all the way to the Coromandel. Not only is Tipi & Bob's place known as a fantastic spot to rest your head, the food is good (locals recommend the scallops) and the bistro bar is a great place to have a drink.
Kylie loved Forest Road - Port Fitzroy
One of the best mountain biking trails on Great Barrier Island, cycling through here is a chance to see amazing scenery and cool wildlife. You get a real sense of the island doing this trip, I've been told, but take a packed lunch because it's a long one.
Kylie loved Harataonga Coastal Walkway
I am planning a holiday to Great Barrier Island and every local I've asked for a recommendation about the best things to do talks of the Harataonga Coastal Walkway. This is a four to five-hour tramp one way and takes in some of the most stunning scenery on the island. A must-do for us and a chance to strap on our packs.
Maree loved Claris Texas Cafe
Great service. I wanted a salad at breakfast and that is exactly what I was aloud to have. More places should be like this!
Kylie loved Earthsong Lodge Limited
A beautiful, special spot for a couple's retreat and a real slice of luxury on Great Barrier Island.
Ricci loved Medlands Beach Backpackers & Villas
I was absolutely gobsmacked at the beauty of this beach, I had no idea beaches like this existed in NZ
The back packers here were clean, great location and fantastic staff
Kaitoke Hot Pools, Great Barrier Island
A beautiful hidden gem. What better way to chillax than under the canopy of the trees in a river of warm flowing water. Good for the soul.
