Best Takeaways: Locals reckon the hangi Otara Markets is a mean feed!

From Mangere mountain to Otahuhu, some of the city's most diverse culture and best food feasts are to be had in South Auckland. Local knowledge is key in finding the tastes of this vibrant area.  Try Simon Gault's favourite Otahuhu local, Malaysian restaurant Penang, discover one of Auckland's best-kept secrets at Secret Thai Garden or head to Otara Markets for the freshest fruit and vege. For takeaways that rock, head to Toby's Seafood or for French toast worth travelling for, you can't go past Ruby Red in Mangere Bridge. Let's hear it for South Side!

Evelyn loved Penang Cafe & Restaurant

Penang has quite a reputation, given that celebrity chef Simon Gault rates it as his favourite Malaysian place in Auckland. It's interesting that quite a lot of people make the trip out to Otahuhu for it and after not getting around to it for ages, I finally made the effort and found it well worth the drive. Funny how sometimes it's the unremarkable looking places that have food that's sensational, this little restaurant makes authentic Malaysian food that is inexpensive and the portion sizes are particularly generous. Make sure you try their chicken dishes as the flavours are superb.

Matt loved Secret Thai Garden

What an amazing experience . . . it's hard to believe this is in the heart of South Auckland.

The owners have done an incredible job of transforming this backyard into an authentic Thai experience.

The entrance transports you straight into Thailand and the service, food and experience all live upto expectations!  We had the banquet between a group of 4.  This included mixed starters, tom yum soup, 4 mains & fruit platter.  Really generous servings and the food was delicious.

Will be back soon

Lopa loved Otara Flea Markets

I love going out to the Otara Flea Markets, there are variety of food stalls, clothing stalls & fruit/vegie stalls and everything is at reasonable prices. My favourite are the Raro donuts you get 12 for $5 and they are freshly made.

Kylie loved Toby's Seafood Otahuhu

For quality and value for money, you can't go past one of South Auckland's tastiest fish and chip shops. If you come to visit Toby's, make sure you go all out and order a man-sized meal of fish, chips and sausages - it's some of the best dollars you will ever spend. The tender fish is encased in just the right amount of salted, crispy batter so that it doesn't overpower the freshness but still gives you that classic Kiwi fish and chip taste experience. They also do a mean fried bread. Another great reason to head to Otahuhu and check out this hidden gem. Love it!

Christina loved Ruby Red Cafe

Great food and atmosphere, I am addicted to the orange cardamon syrup on French toast with bacon - gives maple syrup a run for it’s money!
