Friendly Locals: Longshot's team are reviving coffee culture on Ponsonby Rd.

Nestled at 114 Ponsonby Rd, Longshot is a stylish all-day eatery and bar for both coffee culture enthusiasts and drinkers alike. Yep, you can order a Bloody Mary to wash down their famous waffle version of eggs bene (hooray!) or counterbalance the smashed avocado with a freshly squeezed juice.
That’s because as the little sister to much-loved Ponsonby bar Longroom, Longshot is all about serving up the same good vibes, all-inclusive attitude and delicious food in a seriously serene and sun-drenched spot.
And if scoping the hottest new spots for lunch on Ponsonby Rd is more your thing, this excellent Ponsonby restaurant also offers up local, seasonal fare served as appetising shared plates, such as saffron and mozzarella arancini and chilli salted squid or mains - did someone say Cloudy Bay clams steamed with white wine, garlic and chilli? Yes please!
On the day that Localist visits the Ponsonby cafe is full of office workers perking up with a morning takeaway flat white and more leisurely locals drinking coffee, eating breakfast, reading the paper and conducting business meetings bathed in sparkling sunshine.
Opening Longshot has given co-owner Rich Bagnall an opportunity to provide “something that’s unique on Ponsonby Rd”.
That something unique is the way the little nook that is Longshot flows into the courtyard of Longroom. For Andy, Rich and their team, it’s a chance to bring the sunshine in for locals with its sun-drenched courtyard space. “It was a real opportunity - having the cafe gives us more autonomy over the courtyard space,” he says. “We’d been trying to secure it for a couple of years and are stoked to have finally bought it.”
With the stylish, black wrought iron zoning customers out from the hustle and bustle of Ponsonby Rd, Longshot is proving a hit. It was formerly home to Santos - one of the first cafes in Ponsonby to bring Auckland’s coffee culture to life over a decade ago and its regulars are early converts. “We tweaked the menu a little bit when we took over and changed it up to the current menu when we opened Longshot,” explains Rich. “We added a couple of our favourite breakfast items from Longroom's menu and some new and exciting dishes taken from extensive market research in Australia and abroad.”
Meanwhile new customers Localist spoke to highly recommended the coffee and the traditional English items on the breakfast menu, including the Scotch Egg - a soft poached egg encased in Italian sausage meat and the epitome of deep-fried deliciousness - and the baked beans and chorizo made from scratch in the kitchen.
With so much sunshine and comfortable spots to pull up a chair, drink an excellent Allpress, eat some solid cafe fare and down a drink or two, it’s no wonder locals are calling this Ponsonby cafe “our new fave”.
